Gateway to Asia: Your passport across the globe!

Hula in Gateway to Asia's Explore Asia section in 2009. photo by Judy MirandaCDBF created Gateway to Asia to educate not only the general public but Asians about our own diverse and thriving local communities. Gateway to Asia features more intimate performances than the Main Stage, where audience members can get up close and personal with performers.

Gateway to Asia also showcases our "Explore Asia" exhibits, which focus on specific Asian Pacific communities. Representatives in traditional clothing introduce you to their culture and history, and explain the arts and artifacts on display.

We've introduced visitors to the Filipino, Hmong, Indian, Indonesian communities and more -- it's like a passport to Asia and the Pacific without ever leaving Denver.

For 2010, we'll feature the rich customs and history of Taiwan and South Korea, with organizations representing these two countries on hand to welcome you to a virtual visit.

gateway to asia demoThis year, Gateway to Asia is also going to introduce another special themed section, called "Find Zen in 2010," an area devoted to the many cultural and spiritual traditions throughout Asia that lead to less stress and healthier lifestyles.

What a perfect way to honor Asian culture, with the world in such troubled times and the economy on everyone's minds! "Find Zen in 2010" will feature demonstrations and lectures about meditation, yoga, Zen, Buddhism, and more physical disciplines such as tai chi, chi gong and even massage.

Here's the 2010 schedule for Gateway to Asia's Stage, Demonstrations and Find Zen areas: (check back for updated schedules -- times are subject to change)

MEET THE GATEWAY TO ASIA CO-CHAIRS

Sherry PengSherry Peng
Sherry Peng, Co-Chair of Gateway to Asia, is enthusiastic about her role because she's been to the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival as a fan in the past. "I am very excited about this new opportunity," she says. "I'm looking forward to participating in the festival as a planner rather than an attendee. I believe that CDBF is an amazing organization and should last forever!"

Sachi NinomiyaSachi Ninomiya
Sachiye is the other Co-Chair of Gateway to Asia, as well as the Chair of this year's Opening Ceremony, a unique and popular aspect of the festival. "I am excited to volunteer for the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival because I feel it represents the uniqueness of our Asian cultures here in Colorado, and is an enjoyable weekend activity to spend with your friends and family," she says. "This festival allows an opportunity for us to share our history, arts, traditions, and cuisine with others. We hope to make the experience entertaining, educational, fun-filled, and memorable."
