THE CDBF ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF
THE SECOND ANNUAL 2009 COMMEMORATIVE POSTER DESIGN CONTEST

While more than 30 aspiring artists from across the country showcased their creativity and artistic flare by entering in the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival’s second annual 2009 Commemorative Festival Poster design competition, it is Duc Huynh, a freelance graphic designer from Denver, who has clinched first place.
“I wanted to portray a modern illustration with a conceptual approach of a dragon emerging from the water.  The shape of the dragon's body suggests that it is a boat, with the rays in the back symbolizing boat paddles.  The water is a more stylized approach to the traditional painting by Hokusai titled The Great Wave,” says Huynh. Duc attained his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design.
Huynh’s winning design will be featured as part of the annual festival, and will be used for various collectible merchandise applications including home décor framed prints, festival t-shirts and marketing materials. In addition, he will be attending the Festival to personally sign posters for the public (date and time TBD).

Mingjiang Xiong of Fort Collins took second place. His design incorporates the Chinese character of the dragon and the image of the dragon boat - so the spirit of the cultural event and sports are combined into one.  Mingjiang is a professional graphic designer, and received 3rd place in the CDBF’s First Annual Commemorative Poster Contest in 2008.
Fritz Duggan, a professional graphic designer in Denver, placed third. Fritz has always been interested in the culture behind Dragon Boat Racing, and as a student of Kung Fu, wanted to express this cultural interest through his art with a bright and bold design. Fritz obtained his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from Western State University in Gunnison, Colorado.
Due to so many fantastic entries, the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival also recognized three aspiring designers with Honorable Mentions: Devon Montoya of Denver, Colleen Tully of Lakewood, and Adrian Volz of Denver.

The panel of judges included: Ron Otsuka, Curator of Asian Art at the Denver Art Museum; Julie Segraves, Executive Director of the Asian Arts Coordinating Council; Tony Smith, Marketing and Operations Director of the Cherry Creek Arts Festival; Kit Williams, Chair-Elect of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival; and Alisa Zimmerman, Executive Director of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival.
All three winners received cash awards from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival and the Asian Arts Coordinating Council.  The winning posters were  on display at the 9th Annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, July 25-26, Sloan’s Lake, Denver CO.
